Jack Russell Terriers Available for Adoption
Star light, star bright,
the first star I see tonight,
I wish I may, I wish I might,
have the wish I wish tonight.

Guardian Angel The angel icon indicates that a terrier is sponsored by one or more Guardian Angels. These angels provide financial support for their Starlight terrier which buys food, toys and medical treatment for the terrier.

Starlight Terriers

Here at Russell Refuge, our primary goal is to find forever adoptive homes for our little charges. However, over the years we have provided sanctuary for some special individuals who we consider permanent residents of the refuge as well as those who are undergoing a healing process and not yet ready for adoption. We call these our STARLIGHT DOGS.

You can help these dogs -- or any particular dog that touches your heart -- with a tax-deductable monetary donation, a Pet Smart gift certificate or even just one new toy or bone knowing that your caring will make a difference in their lives. Thank you for your kindness. Here's a list of the current Guardian Angels.

Hi, my name is Stella.

What Stella Wishes For ...

Monetary gifts will enable us to build another "habitat" area similar to Jimmy and Dakota's for Stella and a buddy.

Stella's Story

A JRT mix with the most haunting eyes, Stella has seen so much in her lifetime that one cannot imagine what she has endured. She was captured in a hav-a-hart trap in Brooklyn last year -- a feral dog born on the street, had puppies on the street and never had any positive contact with humans. But for all that has befallen her, she is a very kind dog with no inclination to bite.

Stella has been a major project. She now accepts the leash and truly loves long country walks and though not quite comfortable being petted, she is finally discovering "play." Stella is a wonderful, deserving, mysterious creature...and her eyes are becoming softer every day.

What Ashley Wishes For ...

Ashley would appreciate another comforter (used is fine) as she must have a big, cushy place to disappear into when resting.

Ashley's Story

A New York City shelter dog, Ashley has been to three adoptive homes since her arrival. She does not like "husbands" and could probably still be adopted to a single, anti-social, tolerant, kind woman as she is actually very affectionate with her person.

Ashley fell in love with two of the male dogs she was housed with and mourned when they were adopted. She now has a new buddy to boss around.

We call her our "Little Fruitcake."

What Bandit Wishes For ...

Bandit doesn't think life could get any better then what he has at the Refuge...well, except maybe if he had even more cookies and chewies.

Bandit's Story

Bandit is a funny looking little JRT mix; all brown with white paws and a tip on his tail. He was dropped off here extremely frightened but has improved enough to be handled by all of us. Bandit counts on his "routine" of breakfast, play time, nap time, cookie time, dinner time, cookie time again and bed time; any deviation is upsetting to him. He has found his security and enjoys life fully. What a joy to see him run, leap with glee over and over again, roll in the grass and then run some more.

The left side of Bandit's face was somehow injured before he came here, resulting in a "flat area" and the loss of sight in that eye.

What Bandit Wishes For ...

Spending the summer sitting on the porch barking at all that encroach on her domain, eating biscuits and playing with her new found friends.

Bandit's Story

Two years ago, Bandit at the age of 12 lost her home due to the death of her 90 year old owner. She had been living alone all winter in her owners home with enough heat to keep the house pipes from freezing-- the only contact she had with a human was a relative who come to feed her and take her outside for a few minutes 3 times a day. Though a friend of the owners family and an all breed rescue group, Bandit joined Barkley to live out her days with one of our board members.

2008 Update - Thanks to guardian angel Shannon, Bandit's teeth were cleaned in February. Yeah! Her bright and shinny teeth have made her feel a lot better and very frisky for almost 16--Bandit continues to enjoy her walks (1/3 mile) and barking at anything she can see. She is such a social butterfly!!

Nov 2007 Update - Bandit's blindness continues to progress--it makes her a little afraid of new environments and being in the yard. We notices she becomes a little lost while she "snoops around"... Teeth cleaning is in her future early next year. She loves to snuggle in her fleece blankets.

Hi, my name is Barkley.

Age:13 years

What Barkley Wishes For ...

Barkley loves toys to run around the house with and shred, large balls to play with his buddy Maxwell with in the back yard --- contributions for his medication and medical bills are welcome.

Barkley's Story

At age 11.5 and due to increased seizure activity and recent DX of colasping trachea, the decision has been made to add Barkley to our Starlight dogs. Bark has been started on medication to help his breathing when he has a coughing epsiode and his seizures are being monitored.

Barkley will continue to live in his foster home with one of our Refuge Board members where he can run and play in the yard, watch TV from the back of the sofa and enjoy his senior years.

2008 Update - Barkley continues to do well this past year. His seizures have greatly diminished in the last 6 months and seems to be of shorter duration when they do occur. His tracheal collapse bothers him sometimes more than others. We do make sure he doesn't do too much chewing or barking as that does increase his coughing. Bark and Livy continue to hang out and like to lay in the sun together---thanks for your continued support of Barkley.

What Roy Wishes For ...

You can help make Roy's days more interesting with big chewy bones and rugged "tire biter" toys.

Roy's Story

A tall, beautiful, athletic guy who enjoys playing ball, frisbee and leaping fences. We just adore this dog and wish there was someone who would understand, love and protect him as we do. Roy is a dog who loves too much and as such, is over-protective of those he cares for. For now, his options are few.
